GTA2

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Where can I get a copy of the demo? A. Many places. You can get it from the official website http://www.gta2.com.

Q. When is the full version released? A. It's out now. Bob on down to the shops, or check out any number of online stores. Rockstar Classics carries the game as a free download. No really!

Q. How do I get GTA2 to run on my current PC? A. A few different techniques can be tried. Look at the list below:

  • Windows 2000

One of the most common problems is a compatability issue with Windows 2000. If you are running Win 2000 but cannot get GTA2 to work, go to GTA2.com and download the patch. Along with mutliplayer code and a couple of bug fixes, this sorts out this issue.

  • Graphics Display

There has been some mix up about what the minimum graphics card for GTA2 is. For the record, the official line is you need a 4MB Direct3D compatible card. However if you want to run at high resolutions you'd obviously be better off with a better card. I have not heard of anyone running GTA2 with a card of lower spec than this.

  • Screen Settings

The way you set your desktop can effect GTA2's compatibility. In the official readme is says: “to run GTA2 in a window, you must be running Windows with a 16-bit desktop (i.e. 65536 colours). On some video cards, you may find that you have to change the desktop to 16-bit even to run the game full-screen. You can do this by right-clicking on your desktop and selecting “Properties” then selecting the “Settings” tab and choosing a 16-bit “High Colour” colour palette.” The resolution you choose to run the game in will also effect the game. I have a TNT2 M64, a 32mb graphics card, 128mb of ram and I can't run in a resolution higher than 800×600. If I try the computer hangs on a black screen. If you're having problems getting GTA2 to run, I suggest starting with the lowest resolution offered, with Special Recognition checked in GTA2 manager, then working your way up.

Q. What's the best source for GTA2 information? A. Depends what sort of information you want. News would be G!, run by legendary Schu. If you want cars check out my cars section. If it's help you want, then check out our Help Section.

Q. What cheats are there for GTA2? A. There's a list of cheats below. To active them first enter your name as GOURANGA. You'll here a sound indicating they're activated. Then after that type one of the following:

  • GOREFEST: Enable Blood Splatters

Q. What do the little GTA2 symbols mean? A. There are 50 on each level. Find all of them for a bonus.

Q. On the Residential Sector what do the teleporting cars do? A. Well they teleport you to Wang's garage, they give you varying amounts of money, they drop your wanted level to 0 and if you get all 8 you get a nice reward.

Q. Where can I get a copy of the maps? A. In your GTA2 box.

Q. How do install new cars? A. Check out the help section. I didn't write the tutorial for fun you know (though it feels like it sometimes).

Q. Why aren't there are many GTA2 user cars as there are GTA ones? A. Good question, with a somewhat convoluted answer. The gist of it is that a lot of the big name car makers either don't like GTA2, don't own a copy, or just don't play it. This tends to effect everyone else as they all follow suit. There are a few car makers doing their damndest to get high quality cars into GTA2 (GtAkReYz springs to mind). Making GTA2 cars is actually no harder than GTA, just is a little more restrictive due to the palette system.

Q. Your FAQ sucks, where can I get more help? A. Fair enough, it is a bit brief. If you don't mind abuse you could check out our lovely Newsgroup, alt.games.grand-theft-auto. But I advise you to lurk for a while, the question you have has probably already been answered a hundred times.
